HEBREW 11:1 – FAITH IS…

OPENING AND VERSE(S) OF THE DAY

Hebrews 11:1   Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

In 1910, my uncle Dick was born. The son of my grandpa’s first wife. My grandpa, John Reyenga, had another child in 1914. While the pandemic of Spanish Flu decimated the world with 50 million deaths in 1918-1919. The Flu was in the air, starting with outbreaks of other strains as early as 1914. That earlier outbreak took the life of my grandpa’s first wife and a newborn son. At 28 years old, my grandpa was mourning a wife and child.

Hildegard Zomer was the daughter of a watchmaker. She went to work as a nanny and maid for my grandpa. They fell in love and were married on June 5, 1919. Less than a year later, my father was born. They immigrated to America when he was four months old. Within six years, my grandfather lost his wife and second child to the Flu, met and married a second wife (my grandmother), welcomed a newborn son (my father), and immigrated to the United States.

Sometimes things do not make sense in real-time!

John was a Christian. John married a Christian woman. They had two sons baptized in the church. John’s life was taking off.

1914 was the year World War I started. John served in the Dutch army. John’s wife and second son died.

War. Flu. Death.

If we look at our lives and our stories, there are many things we do not understand. And yet, our faith though tested comes to life. It is often there in the trial that our faith becomes the most precious to us.

FOCUS ON HEBREW 11:1

Hebrews 11:1   Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

In 64 AD, Rome burned, and Emporer Nero blamed Christians. The Roman government began killing Christians.  The Apostle Peterand Apostle Paul are said to have died in this persecution.

At this time, Christianity was considered its own religion. Christianity was founded about 35 years before Peter and Paul were martyred. During the first 35 years, not everything was clear. Was Christianity a Jewish upgrade? A large number of Jews became Christians.

If Christianity was a form of Judaism, the Christians were a protected religion in the empire. Herod the Great before the time of Jesus’ birth negotiated that religious status. Jews could worship God and not bow to the Emporer.

As time went on, it became clear that Christianity was different from Judaism. For instance, Judaism taught that the Law justifies people. The Apostle Paul clarified,

Galatians 2:16  know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

In other words, Christianity is about Jesus. It is about Jesus’ death and resurrection, and the Kingdom God ushered into this world. A new gospel of faith fulfilling the Old Testament expectations. Jesus is greater than Moses. The sacrifice of Jesus is the only sacrifice needed. No need for the temple anymore. No need for Jewish Levitical priests because Jesus was a priest in the order of Melchizedek.

It was for this new reality that Christianity became a persecuted religion in the Roman empire.

Many Christian expected or hoped that Jesus would return while some Apostles like Peter and Paul were still living. Nero dashed those hopes.

Two significant clarifications happened at this time in history.

First, Christianity is not a Jewish sect; it is a separate religion, with its set of hopes and expectations. It is the same in some ways to Judaism, with the same God as Creator, same Devil as an adversary, and angels as servants of God. The Old Testament is the same foundational scripture. Atonement is essential, but in Christianity, Jesus is both the great high priest and the sacrifice once for all.

Hebrews 7:27  Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

Hebrews 9:12  He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.

Second, Christ was likely not coming back in the lifetime of the Apostles. This realization contributed to the necessity of writing down the gospels so that more generations could know about Jesus. By the time the book of Matthew was written, it was clear that Jesus’ return was not in the lifetime of the Apostles, so the gospel was to be preached. Jesus’ own words were written down after the persecution of Nero.

Matthew 24:14  And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

These clarifications launched Christianity as a world contender for the hearts and souls of hundreds of generations.

These two clarifications brought testing and strength to the new movement of Christianity. A new generation of Christians and Christian leaders were coming on the scene.

New generations of Christian leaders take their place in history, proclaiming Christ until all nations and all people are reached.

DIGGING INTO THE WORDS

Today’s verse is from Hebrews Chapter 11:1. We will look at each Greek word and then apply those words to our present situations as Christians.

Chapter 11 verse one says,

HEBREWS 11:1   NOW FAITH IS THE ASSURANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR, PROOF OF THINGS NOT SEEN.

NOW PISTIS (FAITH) IS:

  • THE HUPOSTASIS (ASSURANCE) OF ELPIZO (OF THINGS HOPED FOR)

  • THE ELEGXOS (PROOF) OF PRAGMA (THINGS), NOT BLEPO (SEEN)

Pistis

Faith is trusting in Jesus come what may. The heart sees the possibilities of a walk with God, which guides our thoughts and interpretations of why we are here and the events of our lives. Keep on the Sunny Side of Life is a song about faith.

Faith in Jesus Christ puts us on the “Sonny” side of life. Faith changes your attitude!

1 Peter 1:6-9 is written to people who have gone through trials and tribulations.

Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been put to grief in various trials, that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ — whom not having known you love; in whom, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory—  9 receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Hupostasis

This Greek word is a compound of the word hupo, which means “under” and the word histami, which means “standing.” We get the word “hypostasis” from this Greek word. This word is used in Biology and Philosophy/religion.

When the natures of Christ were discussed at the time of the Athanasian Creed, the Greek word hupostasis was used to describe the natures of Christ.  Jesus is fully God and fully human.

Hupostasis is an interesting Greek word. It means “a setting under” an understanding, essence, concrete or abstract assurance, confidence, substance, and person.

Hebrew 1:3

His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance (hupostasis), and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself made purification for our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Faith is the understanding, the essence, the concrete or abstract assurance, the confidence, the substance, the person. Faith is everything!

Elpizo

Elpizo means expectation or hoped for things. When Hebrews was written, the expectations of everything were settling into a multi-generational church. And through the eyes of faith, we interpret reality.

Faith adjusts our expectations in life. We hope for different things. For instance, when we live life, we reject greed to live moderately.

Hebrews. 13:5-6

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”  6 So that with good courage we say,

“The Lord is my helper. I will not fear.

What can man do to me?”

Here is what we get out of the first phrase. Faith is hupostasis for us. The narrative of our lives sees the world as a journey of faith.

NOW PISTIS (FAITH) IS:

  • THE HUPOSTASIS (ASSURANCE) OF ELPIZO (OF THINGS HOPED FOR)

  • THE ELEGXOS (PROOF) OF PRAGMA (THINGS), NOT BLEPO (SEEN)

Elegxos

The Greek word elegxos has a family of meanings in the Greek language. There are some bright shades such as conviction, proof, evidence, convincing factor, and some rebuking shades such as rebuke and reproof. This word appears twice in the New Testament. We read in 2 Timothy 3:16

Every writing inspired by God is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction which is in righteousness,

The term Elegxos is used in 2 Timothy means “reproof.” The common thread here is a conviction or a convincing or compelling factor. In this case, the compelling factor is the Kingdom of God that is calling us, and though we cannot see that kingdom, we live for it!

In Hebrews, the meaning is not reproof but proof, but not just intellectual proof, conviction proof. The kind of proof that is born out of daily experience.

That is what the next two Greek words are about here.

Blepo

The word Blepo means to see. It can mean “heart sight.” The last word in this verse is the word pragma.

Pragma

The word pragma can mean many things. We get the English word practical from this word.

The word can mean:

  • things
  • matters
  • affairs
  • businesses
  • objects
  • deeds
  • works
  • purposes

This word is usually translated using the word things. We broadly use the word things too. For example, we use things in being part of “things” of the kingdom or the “things” of God. We are referring to many things, things too many to mention. In this case, we are talking about the practical workings of Christianity.

Let’s listen to another song about how faith is everything.

Reflections

When my grandfather lost his wife and child, he served in the Dutch army. He may have been tempted to become an atheist. “Where are you, God?”

Instead, he held on to his faith!

My father was born. John went on to have four more children, one of them still living and witnessing for Christ. I would not have been even born. Someone else would have started Christian Leaders Institute.

Trials are always with us. How do we see the trails? Is our faith everything?

The early Christians were confronted with this decision. The Apostles were dying, and the Roman government was persecuting Christians. Many were falling way because they lost their faith!

We have challenges. You can look at your trials and take the role of the victim, or you can look at your experiences and see them through the eyes of faith.

Seeing through the eyes of faith liberates you. It changes your life narrative to a faith life narrative!

Optional Memorization
